Maintaining Your Heating and Air Conditioning Units

Hello. My name is Max. My wife and I have five children who all live at with us in our large two-story house. My wife and two of our kids suffer from severe allergies which means keeping our home as dust-free as possible. I have learned that it’s crucial to keep our heating and air conditioning units properly maintained at all times. We have a fantastic HVAC company that comes out two times a year to perform routine maintenance on our system. They have taught me what I can do on a monthly basis in order to not only help with my family’s health but also keep our system running efficiently. I would like to share some of the tips I’ve been given. I hope you find this to be useful!

2 Reasons Why Even Minor Water Intrusion Should Not Be Ignored

Kristin Pierce

If you have noticed that water is seeping into your home — such as through your walls — then you might be concerned about the severity of the problem. If you found that the water intrusion was minor, you might feel pretty relieved about the whole situation. However, even minor water intrusion should not be ignored. These are the two main reasons why.

1. Even Minor Leaks Can Cause Serious Property Damage

You might assume that minor water intrusion is not a big deal when it comes to property damage. In fact, at first, it might not be. Over time, however, it can cause a lot of problems. Even minor water intrusion can still contribute to all sorts of problems in your home, including:

  • Rotting walls
  • Rotting flooring
  • Peeling paint
  • Water stains
  • Rusted metals
  • Wet wiring

Over time, this damage is only going to get worse. Even though you might be worried about the cost of handling the water intrusion, you should know that the property damage that can go along with it can be much more expensive. If you ignore the problem too long, you have to worry about your walls, flooring and ceiling rotting in the surrounding area. This could result in the need to replace flooring, drywall, wall coverings and more.

2. Mildew and Mold are Legitimate Problems

Even if the water intrusion is minor enough that your property isn't damaged right away, you still have to worry about mildew and mold. Both mildew and mold love warm, moist conditions and can grow in your walls, underneath your flooring and elsewhere. You may not even be able to see it or easily access it to clean it up, but you and your family could end up breathing in mold spores in some cases. Plus, even if it's only mildew (which is smelly and can damage your walls and other parts of your home but is generally considered to be harmless), you still have to worry about the not-so-pleasant odor that can go along with it.

Even minor water intrusion should not be ignored, even if you don't think that anything is happening. These are two of the main issues that can result from prolonged water exposure from water intrusion, so to prevent these problems, now is the time to have your home looked at by a professional like Atlantic Heating and Cooling to fix any water intrusion issues.
